The Phantasy Phootball League was founded by Thomas Owen Duffy, son of the Emerald Isle, and John Jay High School Class of 2004 graduate, in 2007. According to legend, Duffy came up with the idea after slipping and hitting his head while standing on his toilet and trying to hang a clock. When he came to, he had a vision of a time travel device called a "Phlux Capacitor." This device was a guitar pedal that could only be utilized by Phish front man Trey Anastasio. Trey could use the Phlux Capacitor to shred through time, which he did, taking Senor Duffy back in time to 1985 where he began impregnating dozens of women whose spawn would later serve as the members of the Phantasy Phootball League.
Each team can have a roster of up to 16 active players at the start of play each week, and one player on Injured Reserve (IR). Roster position maximums:
- 4 Quarterback (QB) · 8 Running Back (RB) · 8 Wide Receiver (WR) · 3 Tight End (TE) · 3 Defense/Special Teams (D/ST) · 3 Place Kicker (K)
Owners start 9 players every week:
- 1 QB · 2 RB · 2 WR · 1 FLEX (RB/WR/TE) · 1 TE · 1 D/ST · 1 K
- Owners can add or remove a player from their starting lineup until the beginning of that player's game, at which point their status is locked.
- The IR position can be used for players designated Injured, Out, Suspended, or NA. It cannot be used for players designated Doubtful, DNR, Holdout, or Opt-Out.
- Scoring — individual players earn points for passing or rushing yards, TDs, and extra points, and lose points for negative yardage, turnovers, or missed kicks. Players receive one half-point per reception (Half-PPR). The full scoring breakout lives on the League Rules page.
The Phantasy Phootball League is an elite league that holds its owners to the highest standards of commitment and participation. Owners are expected to be active in discussions over the course of the season as well as the off-season. Discussions on rule changes, trade proposals, etc. should be acted on quickly and not ignored.
Owners who show a lack of commitment can be removed from the league. Specifically, owners can be removed for the following offenses:
- Not being present to participate in the league drapht (auto-draphting)
- Submitting a roster with inactive players — injured, on bye, or otherwise
- Not actively updating a roster prior to weekly games
- Not paying league dues
- Failure to act in good faith when engaging with other owners on transactions — including discussing trades in violation of league rules, or not responding at all
- Generally acting in bad faith, such as trying to exploit rules and acting outside a reasonable expectation of fairness
If removal of an owner becomes a topic of discussion, those conversations will be taken very seriously by the League Office. The League respects its own history and the friendship of its participants — owners should only be removed if truly warranted according to the above rules.
